The latest Cobra Couch to 5K course got off to a fantastic start last Tuesday, with 25 enthusiastic participants lacing up their trainers and taking their first steps on the journey to becoming confident runners.
From the outset, the atmosphere was welcoming and supportive, perfectly reflecting the inclusive spirit of the club. Runners followed the first week of a carefully structured plan during their initial session and were then set two “homework” runs to complete independently. For many, this was their very first experience of running, while others were returning after illness or injury, making the shared sense of achievement at the end of week one all the more special.
During the opening session, the group talked through the structure of the course and what to expect over the coming weeks. A WhatsApp group was set up straight away, giving everyone a space to share progress, offer encouragement, celebrate small wins and remind each other that they are not doing this alone. That sense of community has already become a key part of the experience.
What quickly became clear is that everyone has their own reasons for being there. Some are looking for structure and routine to help build a new habit. Others are keen to make new running friends and feel part of a club environment. For some, it’s about understanding the mechanics of running and learning how to do it safely, while others are simply searching for their mojo and a renewed sense of motivation. Whatever the reason, everyone has been welcomed with open arms.
The Cobra Couch to 5K course is about much more than just running. Each session combines a structured run with a focused learning element, covering topics such as stretching, injury prevention, breathing techniques, mindfulness and motivation. This holistic approach helps runners build confidence, knowledge and resilience alongside their physical fitness.
Looking ahead to week two, the group is excited to keep the momentum going. The focus will turn to breathing techniques and exploring ways to motivate ourselves and others using Strava, adding another layer of connection and encouragement to the programme.
It has been brilliant to see so many new faces at the club and to watch the first bonds forming within the group. The first week has shown that Couch to 5K is not just about reaching a distance goal, but about building confidence, community and a love of movement.
Everyone is welcome at the club, and if the energy and enthusiasm of week one is anything to go by, this Couch to 5K journey is off to a truly positive start.
